Public transport hub Chemnitz main station
Hub: The railwaystation of Chemnitz is to develope to a nodal point for local short-distance traffic and regional long-distance traffic. This hub is not only a meeting place for long-distance and short-distance traffic but also for different stereograms: wide open landscape areas of former railtracks encounter the city center of Chemnitz. The tracks including adjacent derelic sites act as a barrier providing only few flyovers and subways for crossing.
Landscape strip: Additionally a landscape strip is woven into the fabric of the central transfer node constituting an intriguing design element. This landscape strip stands as strange but atmospharic element inmidst the rational, efficient traffic landscape.
Using atmospheric design vocabular borrowed from infrastructure (linearity, ramps) the design further introduces a new rythm (seasons, vegetative growth speed) contrasting with the existing mechanical one of the hub. The landscape strip merges with its surrounding urban fabric and creates new connections. Leftover sites and neglected parts of the railwayscape, now, as parts of the landscape strip become interlinked with neighboring districts.
